Can A High Fiber Diet And Spinal Care Help?
During breakfast this morning, I was thinking about dietary trends, high-fiber foods, and chiropractic care, and how they can work in tandem to reduce inflammation in our bodies. Pouring the Choc Zero Maple syrup over my Birch Benders Keto friendly Paleo waffles, I
couldn’t help but ask myself, “Is this the new trend?” This high-fiber, low-carb, gluten- ad dairy-free breakfast has become quite common in my house. Even as a chiropractor, I remember the years of counting calories and fat grams, or experimenting with the high protein diet of Atkins. Now it seems that the newest “It” diet, one that emphasizes high-fiber and low-carbs to manage weight, and followed by Instagrammers and social media influencers like Brooke Zigler and Tanya Zuckerbrot, can also control gut inflammation!
Since I have a deep and abiding interest in my patients’ physical comfort and well-being, it goes without saying that factors easing inflammation are particularly relevant to me. I think, “How can this help my patients?” One of the goals of chiropractic care is to minimize or eliminate pain in the body, and most pain starts with inflammation—your body’s response to irritants or stressors. Inflammation can be caused by injury, environmental
irritants, diet, and disease, including auto-immune disease.
With so many root causes of inflammation how do you manage it all? You can begin with eating a diet filled with fiber-rich nutrition. I must admit that in all my years of growing up I personally never thought about fiber—EVER!!! I was taught at a young age to pay attention to fat and to count calories. Why did it take us so long to accept the notion that ramping up fiber can help maintain weight loss AND help gut digestion? It definitely can aid in both! I personally and professionally believe this to be true. Fiber, in partnership with plenty of fluids, is your friend! It can make
you feel full, thereby eating less. It is fuel for cells in the digestive tractand helps keep everything moving. It’s good for the heart. It has minimal
or no effect on blood glucose levels. Fiber can do all of these things, and, importantly, it can also lessen inflammation—in both the gut AND the brain! Research has shown that fiber reduces brain inflammation during aging: hello fiber. . . goodbye brain fog! And fiber can dramatically reduce inflammation in the gut. With all of these positive attributes, what’s not to love about fiber?
How does fiber fit in with your chiropractic care plan? A high-fiber diet leads to less inflammation in the gut, brain and body. Chiropractic care also leads to reduced inflammation throughout the body. Spinal manipulations can decrease swelling in the muscles and can increase the range of motion of the joints. Together, a proper diet and good chiropractic care can lead to an overall reduction of inflammation throughout the entire body.
In my chiropractic practice, I see all different types of pain and all different types of symptoms in my office. Some symptoms include low back pain,
neck pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome and headaches, just to name a few. Some patients complain of symptoms of constipation and bloating in conjunction with their low back pain. Chiropractic care from a qualified chiropractor, can be quite effective through spinal adjustments (applying gentle force into a joint to restore proper range of motion) to decrease pain, muscle spasm, swelling and inflammation throughout the body. This adds up to more joint mobility and less pain for the win!
It’s my professional opinion as a chiropractor, that we all make certain choices throughout the day and it’s best to make the right choices for our optimal health. With your overall wellness plan that includes a high-fiber, low-carb diet, regular Spinal Chiropractic health, and regular exercise you will be able to take control of your health. Make the decision to strengthen and replenish yourself from the inside out. Eat foods that will nourish your body and diminish inflammation. Chiropractic care from a highly-trained chiropractor, in tandem with a diet rich in fiber, and a healthy, active lifestyle can reduce joint, muscle and gut inflammation. These positive factors can dramatically increase your quality of life. Your body will thank you!
